
A rain cape for policemen is first mentioned in uniform statute 38/1900 as a form of protection against "rain and storm". The cape was grey or black in colour. Bicycle officers wearing rain capes in Helsinki, 1955.

The rain cape was replaced with a raincoat in 1923. The first model was dark in colour, but the model of 1929 was dark blue. The raincoat featured a belt but no rank insignia. Searching an area near Turku in the late 1940s.

A black coat made of oil or rubber fabric was introduced as an alternative to the dark blue raincoat in 1946. The latter was taken out of use in 1951, and all police raincoats were black until the early 1980s. Photograph from the turn of the 1970s.

In 1971, reflective bands were added to the hem and cuffs of the police raincoat. The dark blue raincoat was re-introduced as an alternative to the black one in 1983. Now, the raincoat featured a sword lion emblem on the left sleeve. Image: Museokuva Matti Huuhka.
